Labyris,
weapon of choice for uppity women

Labyris.com, home of UPPITY WOMEN Magazine

Table of Contents

This is a place for uppity women. You know who you are. You are a woman who refuses to keep your place, to limit yourself in any way, to live down to others' expectations. You are a woman who gets up again and again, every time life knocks you down. You've learned how to survive. Now it's time to learn how to prosper.

Uppity Women Magazine has its own domain name now--www.uppitywomen.net. I wanted an easy-to-remember url (both .com and .org were taken) and felt it would make the difference between the resource archive projects of labyris.com and the magazine clearer to new readers. The two sites will still be linked together and interactive, with announcements pertaining to both on each site. I will be revamping the entire look and organization of the two sites.

Uppity Women's Open Mic! September 22nd, 7 pm, at Louden Nelson. Donation requested to cover costs, $3-$5. Refreshments will be served.

I am looking for articles for a Fat Pride issue in October 2000. Email editor Summer articles are open-topic, anything goes.

Goddess Circle

Visualize a circle of nine women, each on a journey of spiritual deepening. For the full turning of the Wheel of the Year, they meet at new and full moons, under the guidance of a priestess, coming together to share, strengthen, and encourage. The gentle framework of an apprenticeship program provides form and inspiration. The presence of the Goddess blesses their voyage. Are you one of the nine? Ninth Wave, a Circle of Goddess Magic, is facilitated by Lunaea Weatherstone (founding mother, SageWoman magazine, Priestess of Brigid, Temple and Fellowship of Isis). For more information, see the Ninth Wave web site at ninthwave or call 454-9619. Internet access is a prerequisite for this program.

Labyris.com Site Development--Requested Input

I am requesting any links you have discovered that are useful to uppity women or are related to other progressive issues. They will be used in both the magazine and the feminist issues archives I am working on. I would appreciate any contributions to this project. Also, please spread the word that we accept free calendar listings! [Not limited to local events.]

I welcome women who would like to take over sections of labyris.com and create their own projects and pages. I have plenty of space. Let me know what you would like to work on. Naturally the credit would be all yours for those pages.

A couple of areas I don't have time to work on are graphics and sound. I would love to offer space and exposure to Santa Cruz, CA women artists and musicians (including vocalists). Women willing to oversee the creation of pages for this purpose please contact me. Someone has offered to help with scanning images, etc. I can teach basic html skills to anyone wanting to contribute.

I want to make this page and my magazine as inclusive as possible and welcome articles from a variety of perspectives and cultural experiences. There are entire groups of women who are either poorly represented on the internet or are not there at all. And there are refreshing and highly creative pages out there trying to address this lack, such as Exoticize This,   La Malinchista,  National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance,  and My Sistah's Room.  A great organization battling racism and hate groups: The Southern Poverty Law Center.

Other Uppity Women Sites

For cool uppity women t-shirts and other stuff check out uppitywomen.com. We are not affiliated--just two women who liked the same phrase. Also, there's an Uppity Women mailing list that predates my magazine (and is independent of it) available from onelist.com. There are two more Uppity sites: www.zebra.net/~llangdon/uppity.html   and http://members.aol.com/aurorahe/index.htm. It's interesting that several of us identified with the term that strongly. Have another uppity site? Let me know. Feedback on the term? Email me, link is below.

Let me know what you think of this background or any aspect of site navigation or content you find confusing. Go here for a white background version of this page.
