Spotlight on Links and Resources

Hues Magazine has gone out of print, but you can still see their Spring '98 issue. Also check out their Summer '97 issue with a wonderful article entitled, "Ghetto Feminism."

Another magazine near and dear to my heart: Radiance: The Magazine For Large Women. This magazine is a lifeline for large women and their allies.

For teens, there is an alternative to Seventeen and other fashion and boy centered magazines. Teen Voices is available in print for the teen in your life. $21.75 payable to Women Express Inc., P.O. Box 120-027, Boston, MA 02112-0027. Or call (888) 882-TEEN.

For younger girls, there is New Moon, available from New Moon Publishing, P.O. Box 3587, Duluth, MN 55803, for $29/year. Call 1 800 381 4743. There is a publication for parents as well, called New Moon Network.

Other interesting sites: Neofeminism.com,   Sacred Spaces,   Bitch,   Off Our Backs   and the otherUppity Women.

A site with many interesting resources of an environmental and counterculture nature, including vegetarian: Fennario.

For information about the situation for women in Afghanistan: The Feminist Majority.

Offline, you can reach Welfare Warriors at (414) 342-6662, and Jobs With Justice at (212) 434-1106. Both organizations are dealing with the so-called "welfare reform" and its painful aftermath.

Does dealing with patriarchy make you want to have a hissyfit? Then check out Hissyfit.com. For more laughs visit Disgruntled Housewife.

Local Resources

Locally, one of our most valuable resources for women is Herland Book Cafe. Herland is located at 902 Center Street near downtown Santa Cruz, CA. It is on the corner of Center and Cedar. The hours are M-F 10-6, Saturday and Sunday 12-6. Send Herland Email.

Kayla Rose started Herland with a business partner 5 years ago, and has continued to make it a success on her own. Herland serves as a resource directory, social connection, activist link, and art gallery. She is looking for a space to relocate since the Women's Health Center is expanding and have taken over the cafe section (they purchased the building). Give her a call if you are willing to help when they move. She is presently planning to move in the Spring.
