And the first Uppity reader speaks:
I want to tell you that I think your site is wonderful. There needs to be more sites out there for women. Speaking of which, there are two sites I thought might interest you.
The first is www.womenfly.com. It's directed at women flyers, but the site is really for any woman who has the guts to go out and make what they want out of their life. They sell T-shirts and other merchandise with inspiring quotes by women.
The second site I recommend is really fabulous. It's called womantraveler.com. It's directed at women travelers going solo, or with other women. I think it's great because it encourages women not only to travel, but to be safe and smart.
The site offers tips for women travelers (like placing money in a push-up bra, where the pads usually are), stories by women who travel solo, a bulletin board where anyone can leave questions (I've done it, and received tons of e-mails in reply), links to other interesting sites for women, and much much more.
Thanks again for having a great site. I know it's still new, but I think you will go very far with it. If you need any help from me, please ask. I don't know how to set up a web site, but I can write. Please keep up the interesting work.

I assume you are aware of Saffire-Uppity Blueswomen?
They are a truly irreverent blues act, with verses that are not only raunchy, but uplifting and validating for women.
They even have a song that includes the number to a national abuse hotline ("Dump that Chump"), and they take time during their act to encourage women to get help if they are being abused.
Not only that, but these gals are truly talented and put on one hell of a show. Men even love them (I don't think they dare not to, with the attitude floating in the air at an "Uppity" show).
On that subject, I tried to take "uppity" as a handle on hotmail and have ended up in a long discourse with the owner (he's why I couldn't have it). He says being in a group of 200 drunk, fist-punching women, singing along to "Bitch with a Bad Attitude" is an uplifting experience. What a gutsy guy! Made me happy to find out there are a few guys like that in the world. If he was closer, I might be in love.

Thanks for your own great site, I just found it. I may submit an abuse story for your use. I am a little concerned about the stealing of work posted on the web, because I'm hoping to get this story published commercially when I am ready to submit several short stories. Or are you looking for short stories? Perhaps not; perhaps just personal stories. Let me know. Thanks again.

Hi, My name is David de Alba. I have been inducted by the T.G. forum on line as one of the best impersonators of this Century at their "Gallery of Greats". I am not a woman, I am not a drag queen either. but i am one of the better LIVE SINGING impressionists around. If you check my website at "David de Alba's theatrical Arts Page" I have dedicated myself since 1965 till now to represent the best of lady singers like Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, and the French Chanteuse Edith Piaf. It will be nice if you like my site and me and my art, if you could offer me a link on your page.
I was a big part of the Bay Area for years and our last home was in Santa Cruz and even there I played some lovely spots. I sure hope to hear from you. I have given half of my life to the stage and for women to bring them up to its highest peak and as you will go through my site you will see very detailed pages on me and others in the FI field. All live (no pantomime). I need your support, too!
God bless,
David de Alba (entertainer)

A report of a book about an obviously uppity woman:
highly praised biography of alexandra david neel tibetan explorer
letting you know about our biography, The Secret Lives of Alexandra David Neel which Overlook Press published last summer. David Neel is best known for her daring journey to Lhasa in 1924 she wrote 25 books on eastern themes and lived to be 101. She was determined to show "what the will of a woman can do."

Hello!
I am very happy to have discovered your website and Uppity Women magazine. I love the idea of uppity women and I think that women need to be more active in support of each other's upitty-ness. I was also very moved by your story. It's really good to hear people talking about their difficult journeys through life so that others can know they are not alone and there is hope. I salute your courage.
I know of a really wonderful website that I think would be a good link for Uppity Women, it's called "The Red Spot" and it's all about periods. It is very well done, has the basic biological info of how it all works, which I don't think most women even know, at least not in detail; and it also gives women a chance to share anecdotal stories on a variety of topics like cramps, PMS, the moon. It made me really happy. Another site where I sometimes find articles on alternative medicine is Nexus Magazine. They have 2 articles of special interest to women, "Hormone Heresy" and "the Osteoporosis Myth" which give the skinny on how treating women's natural biological processes as disease is big business for the drug industry, while also providing useful info about how your hormone system functions, and how dangerous hormone replacement therapy actually is.
Thanks and blessed be, gretchen mcpherson
