Ducks And Reflections

by A. J. Heard

Sunlight reflecting off the water
small creek flowing merrily on its way
Ducks, drake and mate
paddling slowly
inspecting the marshy banks
for a suitable nesting place.

Like my soul
inspecting the marshy banks of your words
looking to see if you are suitable
for the keeping of my heart
the nesting of my soul.

They tramp through the tall grasses
circling around
checking for firm support
searching for signs of danger
instinctively understanding the need
to have safety for their young chicks.

As I peer through the exaggerations
and wishful stories
searching for signs of insensitivity
uncaring, selfish cruelty, hidden dangers
instinctively understanding the need
to have safety for my feelings
for them to grow strong and sure
enough to support
the longing and wanting in my soul.
